Computers, iphones, ipads, tvs, and many more. All of these screens are being used every day. Are they affecting your life? Yes, the answer unfortunately is yes. There are many risks when it comes to screen time, from losing the ability to write without softwares with auto correct, to not using screens before going to bed and to your mood when you use too much screen time. Are screens really the best option or should we raise our heads from the phones, computers or other devices and live our lives the right way.
When teens text each other, they most of the times, do errors, but the auto corrector, writes the right thing for them. These social media habits are sneaking into the student's’ academic work. As noted by the Pew Researchers, teens use texting writing style instead of proper capitalization and punctuation in school work. In 2008, a survey recorded that 86% of these students used facebook regularly. This means that students are using way too much social media, by the fact that it is already going to their school work, that is completely excessive. In addition, college students make these errors in school work because they are not paying attention due to multitasking for 14.4 hours across devices, according to a recent study. In fact, with technology in our lives, our critical thinking has declined. This is proven by Patricia Greenfield in the article “Is technology producing a decline in critical thinking and analysis?”. She says that most students that use tech media for homework, look at the answers in the internet, this declines their knowledge. This proves that the critical thinking of students is declining really fast, if teens don’t stop looking for homework answers in the internet and start trying to their homework using their knowledge and skills, then we are going to start to create a generation of people senseless people.
Parents and teachers can obviously tell that teens, are sometimes moody. Is this only due to not getting enough sleep? Homework? Or is there a reason beyond all of that? Teens that are on facebook for a long period of time every day will most likely have facebook depression. This consists in a series of symptoms, such as anxiety, other disorders and unhealthy behaviors. In addition there is even an internet addiction, which leads to teens having a compulsive behavior, depression, having a difficulty at paying attention and being hyperactive. This was all proven by Jim Taylor, an expert in the effects of screen time in teens, in the article, “The Bad, the Ugly and the Good of Kids Use of Social Media.”
Using screens before going to bed equals to an unhealthy night of sleep, as proven by scientists. The light from the screens affects the circadian rhythms, and teenagers are sensitive on this. Teenagers that use devices in the hour before bed was associated a 13 to 52 percent increase of needing more than 60 minutes to fall asleep. In another survey that also proves to screen not being healthy is that, 90% of the girls and 80% of the boys uses cell phones in the hours before bed, laptops were almost as common. In addition it is unhealthy to be in front of screens for many hours during the day as that can lead into not having enough sleep and then affects poor school, emotional disturbances, and in some cases suicidal ideation. In a recent survey it said that girls reported 5.5 hours of screen time throughout the day and boys almost 7, this is completely insane.
On the other hand, researchers have attempted proving that technology can improve test scores, grades and overall students learning. Unfortunately, however, researchers proved that students that have an excessive usage of screen time have a very poor academic performance. There are surveys that state that in an educational environment that places a strong emphasis on standardized testing, technology’s effect on test scores with great consequence. More recent studies have demonstrated that technology can have a positive impact on test scores. In an eight-year study, researchers found significant student achievement gains in test scores after computer technology was put into use and integrated with standards. However, most of this data is false and outdated.
Help teenagers have a better life. Don't let them have health injuries or poor relationships or even lose their knowledge by being lots of hours in front of the computer. Make sure you help others and make sure you look after yourself. Make technology an innovation and excellent thing by stopping this the many things that have happened to people from it. Are screens really the best option or should we raise our heads from the phones, computers or other devices and live our lives the right way.
