Although many may choose the side of banning bottled water from schools there are others that want to keep it. The American School, in Warsaw currently sells bottled water and is now researching if they should modify it or not. There are schools around the world, where students drink from water fountains or taps when they are thirsty. Is it safe for students to do so? Or is it safer for schools to have bottled water? Schools have to make the right choice and leave the excellent bottled waters in the school’s cafeteria.
Bottled water and tap water, come from the exactly same sources: lakes, springs and aquifers according to Elena Conis in the article “Bottled versus tap: “Which is safer?”. In fact, the water in the store’s shelves is tap water but filtered and treated with extra steps to improve the taste and quality. Conferred by the scientists in “Response to “Goodbye, Bottled Water?” The water fountains at school, in some places are tap water because of the poor conditions of the environment. Therefore this is another reason why schools should sell bottled water , so students drink much safer, purer and well treated water. Some schools have ended their contracts with plastic water bottles, which is a giant mistake, because they swap it with giant bottle refilling stations which leads to various risks. The first risk is that there will be rows of students at each station waiting for their turn to refill their water bottles, this will lead to students being late to class. Plus refilling their own water bottles will just make germs, go around each water bottle. Then there is going to be an increase in the number of sick students since bacterias will go around.
Normally, people choose bottled water for several reasons, including its refreshing taste, reliable quality, zero calories and additives and convenience. If schools ban bottled water, what certainly will happen is students will choose another bottle and/or canned products that are less healthy and may contain lots of additives and calories. Plus, the main reason that students buy bottled water it’s because it is easy to carry around and when needed it’s refreshing. In fact, cited in the article “Statement from International Bottled Water Association”, since 2000 approximately 73% of the growth in bottled water consumption has come from people switching from carbonated soft drinks. This means that people are already choosing to switch their drinking habits, why not adapting that to the students too and make.
As there are the pros of water bottles, there are also the cons, though these are completely outdated and not genuine. The amounts of contaminants on a water bottle you buy at the stores are totally below toxic levels, but if it is left in the sun or in the car on a hot day it may but it is relatively impossible, to make the contaminants starting to be toxic again. But that is nearly impossible. Then, selling water bottles pollutes the earth. But most people recycle them and if they don’t the numbers of thrown water bottles to the ground is getting smaller and smaller.
Overall plastic water bottles should be selling at every school. All students deserve to have a fresh water bottle selling in their school’s cafeteria. The American School of Warsaw will in fact continue to sell plastic water bottles. In order for students to have a fresh drink, to drink at any time and a contamination-free refreshments schools have to sell plastic water bottles. If schools make a good choice on the company, it’s definitely much better to sell water bottles.
